I didn’t find out about this today, though I was aware of his illness.
Ross Douthat (September 18, 2007) – Robert Jordan, RIP (Books)
I have read the eleven published books of the Wheel of Time series and will read the twelfth assuming it does get published. Despite the slow-down in the plot, I still enjoyed most of the books and still looked forward to reading what happened next in each book.

Never heard of him, but I guess I’ll borrow those books when I return the others I currently have from you. For me, the writers I couldn’t get enough of during my adolescent years were Larry Niven, Piers Anthony and Douglas Adams.
Jordan’s real name has me thinking of a certain Beatles song… now I can’t get it out of my head. Can you guess the song?
Hint: his name is (James) Oliver Rigney.

I didn’t actually start reading Jordan until much after my adolescence — Niven and Piers Anthony (along with many others, including Asimov, Card and Brooks) were staples during. For some reason, I never read Douglas Adams then either.
As for the Beatles song, I think I know the one you mean, but the name isn’t coming to me. I keep getting stuck on Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. [Googling] Ah, Eleanor Rigby.
